DOROTA NIEZNALSKA
Born 1973 in Gdansk.
Completed Lyceum of Fine Arts in Gdynia-Orlowo.
From 1993, she studied at the Faculty of Sculpture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk in the studio of prof. F. Duszenko and multimedia studio, where in 1999 she defended her diploma.
She collaborated with the Wyspa Gallery and the Wyspa Progress Foundation in Gdansk. In the years 2002-2010, the installation Passion became the cause of the most important court trial concerning Polish contemporary art. At the same time, this process was a significant turning point in the cultural war in Poland, and for the author herself it was a traumatic experience that stigmatized and censored her art for many years.
In 2013, she obtained a PhD degree at the Faculty of Sculpture, Direction Intermedia Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk. In 2010-2017, lecturer at Department of Sculpture and Intermedia, Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk.
Creates sculptures, installations, photographs and videos. Her early work made use of religious symbols. She combined the question of the powerful Catholic tradition in Poland with male domination in society. Furthermore, she addressed the subject of identity, sexuality and stereotypical roles of women and men. At present she is intrigued by social and political relations in the context of violence. Her research projects concern memory places, traces of memory/forgetting and history.
The interest in learning about the mechanisms of forgetfulness is invariably expressed by psychoanalysts, psychologists and neurologists. In the humanities, it appears as a privileged object of lamentation for political, social and cultural amnesia. It arouses interest when all foundations on which cultural identities are built seem to be eroded, when there is no will to go beyond individual, local upholding and shared memories. In art, oblivion plays a smaller role than memory, often confused with it, it emerges from the works of contemporary artists, as it were, against their will and against comments attached to them. Ewa Rewers, The art of oblivion
