| description: | Description: Curatorial text from the permanent exhibition at the Polish Post Museum in Gdańsk:
This installation commemorates the Poles from the Free City of Gdańsk who became victims of German violence in 1939. They endured beatings, humiliation, dispossession, deportation, and forced conscription into the German military—and, above all, imprisonment in jails and concentration camps. Many were tortured to death or killed in executions. The title of the installation refers directly to the recollections of Roman Bellwon. Following his arrest in September 1939, he was held at the Victoriaschule, a camp for civilian prisoners. There, he was interrogated, terrorized, and beaten. His tormentors pointed to blood on the floor, saying, "Das ist das Blut von deinem Bruder Edmund!" ("This is the blood of your brother Edmund!"). He was then forced to wash away the stains. The cellar—as a site of interrogation and violence—serves as a significant context for this installation. |
